Program Proposal
NASPA IV-East Regional Conference         Skokie, Illinois           November 2-5, 2002

  1. Title (10 word maximum):

Merging Interpersonal and Digital Interactions: Virtual Communities in a Residence Hal

  1. Brief Description (to be printed in the conference program; 60-word maximum)

An extensive web site, chat and discussion boards system was developed in the Fall of 2002 for a first year student residence hall designed to enhance student interactions and involvement. This program will provide a demonstration of the web site, chat and discussion system and present evaluation information about the program’s success.

  1. Justification:

Explain briefly (1) how this program relates to the conference theme and (2) the familiarity of the presenter(s) with this topic.

Please attach additional sheets if necessary.

Computer mediated interactions using e-mail, chat and discussion boards are a fact of life for many college freshmen. By providing a context and medium for student interactions in a first year residence hall, and integrating these digital interactions with residence hall programming and university initiatives, students may become more involved with each other and with the campus, enhancing their learning opportunities.  The presenters have developed and are conducting this project in a first year residence hall of over 400 students during the Fall and Spring semesters using existing campus based technology (Campus Pipeline and MS FrontPage).

  1. Coordinating Presenter:

All coordinating presenters must be members of NASPA. It is the responsibility of the coordinating presenter to communicate with all program participants (other presenters) concerning the status of the program.
